Danielle Sucher has created an interesting app for the Chrome browser. Jailbreak the Patriarchy genderswaps the world for you. When it’s installed, everything you read in Chrome (except for gmail, so far) loads with pronouns and a reasonably thorough set of other gendered words swapped. For example: “he loved his mother very much” would read as “she loved her father very much.”
This makes reading stuff on the Internet a pretty fascinating and eye-opening experience. A few of the revised headlines we read on Foxnews.com this morning:
Catholic Diocese and university bid on ex-megachurch as pastor battles with her ministry over intellectual property
UNC Wilmington Holds Classes, Gunwoman at Large
5 Things Men Want Most in a Woman
Ohio to Execute Woman Who Killed 3 Sleeping Daughters
Was your response exactly the same as it would have been had the genders not been swapped? Try it out on any website, song lyrics, or other content, and find out what the world be like if we reversed the way we speak about women and men.
