A World Beyond Gender?
Writing about the American Sociological Association's Real Utopia conference held in Denver earlier this month, Sociology Lens editor Amanda Kennedy discussed a panel entitled "A World Beyond Gender," featuring Barbara Jane Risman, Judith Lorber, and Michael Kimmel. The panel began with the "simple but radical" premise than only a world beyond gender--one in which gender no longer structures individual experiences, interactions, and social institutions--will be a truly just world. Girl Scout Research Institute> conducted a survey among U.S. girls aged 14-17 to find out what effect social networking is having on their friendships and self-perceptions. While a majority of girls say social networking has made them feel more connected to their friends, just about all of them would be willing to ditch Facebook and other sites if it meant holding on to their best offline friend.
