Do Millennials Care About Causes?

The millennial generation has a reputation for being eco-minded and cause oriented, but some have questioned how much their proclaimed concerns for people and the planet result in action. To find out, Ypulse surveyed 1,300 high school and college students in the U.S. and discovered the following:
  • Nearly three-quarters of millennials (72%) have a specific cause in which they invest.
  • 79% regularly volunteer time and 50% regularly donate money to their cause.

Understanding Youth: Three Key Differentiators

By whatever name they’re called—Generation Next, Gen Y, echo boomers, millennials—today’s youth are a generation like no other. They are true digital natives, born into a world of bits and bytes, of ever-improving technologies and rapidly proliferating modes of communication and commerce. In much of the world, they are more multicultural than any previous generation. To them, globalization and unprecedented access to other people and information is simply the norm. In my work with millennials—through the Havas companies and the One Young World (OYW) youth forum—I have come to admire a generation marked by seemingly limitless drive and potential. What really sets them apart, in my view, is their approach to education, their ability to influence, and their capacity to effect positive social change.

One Young World: Harnessing the Power of Youth

[caption id="attachment_3318" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="TckTckTck "negotiator trackers," Bangkok Climate Change Conference"][/caption] We know from Euro RSCG Worldwide’s studies of the millennial generation that young people around the globe have an incredible power to effect change, thanks in no small part to the greater connectivity brought about by new technologies and social media. Members of this generation also share a deep sense of duty and pragmatism. Rather than blaming other generations or cultures for the planet’s afflictions, they are ready to shoulder responsibility for creating achievable solutions. Eight in 10 of the millennials we surveyed in our latest global study don’t just believe it is their generation’s duty to change the world, they also believe they have the power to pull it off.
