I know we all read enough news on how the data systems and innovations coming out of the tech sector are driving growth and changing the world. However, one area where you might not peg the tech industry as a beacon of hope is with regard to planetary preservation. While that sounds a bit dramatic, I believe technology firms represent our best chance for overcoming climate change and the other environmental crises we face.
Today, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton voluntarily committed to increase women’s representation at the highest corporate level by signing the Women on the Board Pledge for Europe, which aims to increase women’s board membership to 30 percent by 2015 and 40 percent by 2020. Businesses run by women in Britain generate £130bn for our economy. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of female-owned companies in the U.S. grew 44 percent, twice as fast as the number of male-owned firms. And in China, women own more than 40 percent of private businesses. This trend is a global phenomenon and at the same time it’s clear that many of our empowered businesswomen are choosing to opt out of the male-dominated boardroom.
